Pakistan Nationalists: Remove U.S. Bases

Sunday, 03 February 2002 12:00 AM

"We demand that American bases from our soil (Balochistan) should be removed and the government should ... refrain itself from becoming an instrument of foreign forces," said Khudai Noor Khan, party senior vice president.

Pakistan has allowed U.S. forces to use four Pakistani air bases in its fight against terrorism. Two, Pasni and Balbandin air bases, are located in the Balochistan province, which borders Afghanistan.

U.S. forces are using these air bases and facilities for logistic operations and not for air strikes on Afghanistan. For its active participation in the war against terrorism, the U.S. government has promised a $1 billion aid package for Pakistan and defense cooperation.

Addressing a news conference on Sunday in Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, Khan said the JWP does not accept any amendment by the military government of the country's Constitution to allow the foreign forces, even if justified. He said the military government of Gen. Pervez Musharraf is not authorized to amend the Constitution.

Khan described Pakistan's foreign policy as undignified and detrimental to national prestige. JWP is a small political party which had an alliance with the former ruling party called the Muslim League. In Pakistan's last elections, the JWP and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's of the Muslim League formed a joint government in Balochistan which JWP later left over the issue of provincial autonomy.

The JWP has advocated provincial autonomy, termed it vital for the national survival and said it was the only solution for economic and political problems in Pakistan.

The JWP leader condemned the treatment of Afghans imprisoned at the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Balochistan is home to a large number of Afghan refugees who entered Pakistan from Chamman and other border routes.
