5 p.m. Tuesday Deadline for Florida Recount

Monday, 13 November 2000 12:00 AM

In a two-page statement, Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris laid down the law, Florida style, to the the Gore and Bush campaigns today.

She will give no extensions to the deadline. Citing relevant state laws, Harris said Florida would seek to certify the ballot counts from all of its 67 counties by 5 p.m. EST Tuesday.

"If [certification] is not with the [Secretary of State's] office by 5 p.m. of the seventh day after the election, those counties who have not submitted their results will be ignored" and the state will certify its own ballot count, Harris said.

The full presidential ballot, she said, would likely be certified by this coming Saturday, when the count of overseas absentee ballots is completed. "I anticipate the presidential election in Florida will be certified by Saturday afternoon barring judicial intervention."

Gore's recount representative, former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, said Gore's campaign would challenge Harris' decision. Christopher said her actions were "arbitrary and unreasonable."
