Overweight Young At High Risk For Hip Problems

Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:00 AM

Overweight young adults are at risk for serious hip problems in later life, according to a large new study from Norway.

Using data from over a million patients, Dr. Gunnar Flugsrud and his colleagues at Oslo's Ulleval University looked for the relationship between weight and hip problems due to osteoarthritis.

They found that in general people who were overweight or obese based on BMI were about two more likely than normal-weight adults to develop serious osteoarthritis and require. And those who were overweight before the age 25 had nearly three times the normal risk.

"Being overweight when young had a higher impact than being overweight when older," the researcher wrote. "Our findings highlight the desirability of prevention and early treatment of obesity."

The study appears in the journal, Arthritis & Rheumatism.
