An Open Letter to a Patriot

Thursday, 24 May 2001 12:00 AM

As you know, your colleague Sen. Jeffords has quit the Republican Party to become an independent, and has pledged to vote with the Democrat caucus, thereby throwing control of the upper body to the Democrats.

Knowing what I do about you - that you are a good and decent man who is deeply concerned about the direction in which the left wing of your party is attempting to take the nation - I am going to ask you to do something to help frustrate its plans.

I know that you believe with me that we have in the White House a new president who, if given a chance, can lead this nation in the direction we both want: toward an expansion of individual liberty, fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense. I am also certain that you are aware that with the Senate in the control of the Democrats, President Bush’s efforts to achieve these goals will be frustrated and obstructed.

You ran as a Democrat when you sought your Senate seat, and as an honorable man I know that you would not want to turn your back on the Democrat voters who elected you as one of their number. So I will not ask you to do what many others are asking that you switch parties and become a Republican.

What I am going to ask you to do is simply to side with the Republican caucus to allow it to control the Senate in much the same manner as Sen. Jeffords is planning to do with the Democrat caucus to give it control. In that way you can remain loyal to the voters of Georgia while at the same time preventing the all-but-openly Marxist leadership of your party from taking this nation further down the road to a coercive socialist state.

In many ways, you hold in your hands the future of America. As a patriot I call upon you to act in what you know are the best interests of America.

With all personal regards,
