One Reporter's Opinion: Lax Border Control Manifests Itself as More Violence Against Americans

Friday, 01 November 2002 12:00 AM

It is this reporter's opinion that had the FBI and the INS done their jobs, the innocent sniper victims would be alive today. Current policy on illegal immigration in America is a bungled, confused mess.

Following the sniper killing spree, we've been able to determine the following: John Williams Muhammad was engaged in the smuggling of illegal aliens into our nation. His young associate, John Lee Malvo, is an illegal alien who arrived in the U.S. aboard a cargo ship from Jamaica in the company of his mother and other illegal aliens who came ashore south of Miami, evading immigration authorities.

It is scandalous the number of times the INS could have intercepted Muhammad before his deadly rampage! Here are a few missed opportunities:

The point to be made is that the FBI and the INS KNEW Muhammad and had the chance to prosecute him and put him behind bars on at least three separate occasions.

America is relaxing for the moment. The murderous sniping has come to a halt.

But not really!

As long as our borders remain porous, and as long as there are Muhammads and Malvos running loose in our country, the violence will continue.

But where the government – the FBI, the INS and other agencies – are failing to protect us, civilians are taking up arms to protect our borders. Call them vigilantes, militia, soldiers of fortune, ranch rescue or, now, American Border Patrol ... armed citizens are patrolling our borders, sending a message to the government that where it will not do its job, we will.

One such group operating in southern Arizona tells me they have caught more than 2,000 illegals on their 22,000-acre ranch. Who are these patriotic Americans? They include former Special Service officers, former Navy SEALs, some Canadian Light Infantry soldiers, reserve police officers, deputy sheriffs and a few strong-willed women.

The aim of these volunteers is to inform the public of this continuing invasion of America – this challenge to the sovereignty of our nation. They not only carry guns, but they're also using video footage, summaries, photos ... and those of us in the media, including this reporter, who first labeled it an "illegal invasion" and has been fighting it for the past 30 years – these groups take our borders seriously, as should you and I.

Two years ago these organizations had a few members. Today their numbers are growing into the thousands.

The impact on human lives is almost beyond comprehension. May I share with you the experience of a little widow living along the border. She lies in bed at night with a shotgun at her side. Illegals pour across her property. They have killed her chickens and lambs, polluted her water, and left refuse in their wake. The local sheriff is so overwhelmed that he offers her very little help. She knows firsthand, as an American citizen living alone, the tortures of the illegal aliens invasion.

Multiply that by thousands and you have a clear picture of the human tragedy that has resulted from lax border control.

From the time you awakened this morning to the time you'll go to sleep tonight, 10,000 illegal aliens will have flooded into the U.S. from and through Mexico. The illegals in the U.S. have grown to 12-15 million and it's only the beginning ... unless we stop it now! However, in the words of Phyllis Schlafly, "... not much hope for that as long as the Democrats want the votes and Republicans want the cheap labor."

The legendary George Putnam is 88 years young and a veteran of 68 years as a reporter, broadcaster and commentator ... and is still going strong. George is part of the all-star line-up of Southern California's KPLS Radio – Hot Talk AM 830.
