One Reporter's Opinion: Border Patrol – What About the OTMs?

Thursday, 09 September 2004 12:00 AM

Caruba calls our attention to an area in Arizona called the Naco Strip, a primary route of illegal entry into the U.S. by significant numbers of Arab-speaking males. Caruba shares with us interesting information gathered by our good friend Chris Simcox, who owns the small-town weekly newspaper the Tombstone Tumbleweed.

Simcox, on the Arizona border with Mexico, revealed that males of possible Syrian and Iranian descent have been detained in the past few weeks – that since Oct. 1, 2003, more than 5,500 illegal aliens designated Other Than Mexican (OTM) have been apprehended crossing the Arizona terrain. He says it's obvious that these OTMs have not come here to pick vegetables, mow lawns, pluck chickens or wash cars, but may have more sinister intentions.

Simcox suggests we do the mathematics, considering that if only five Muslim terrorists cross the border every day for a year, it could add up to 1,800 people ready to do the bidding of Osama bin Laden ... that if this had been going on for just three years since 9/11/01, that's an army of 5,500! (There are an estimated 2.9 million Muslims presently in America.)

Caruba reminds us that extremists worldwide are estimated to be in the neighborhood of 10 percent of the overall population and that applied to the U.S., that represents a potential 290,000 American Muslims sympathetic to the Islamist cause.

No matter how you figure it, it suggests a substantial threat exists that is exacerbated by our government's failure to stop terrorists at our borders.

There is no proof that al-Qaida operatives in large numbers have crossed the border. Yet all we have to do is point to the 9/11 operatives coupled with sloppy immigration procedures and the repeated charge that Middle Easterners, having shaved their beards and discarded their turbans, speaking a little Spanish, have been coming into California and Arizona through Mexico.

Obviously, it's a subject the Bush administration and Karl Rove would shy away from until after Nov. 2, Election Day. Caruba says:

My friend Jerry Seper of the Washington Times also writes about the open-door policy being pursued by the Bush administration. According to Seper, "About 80,000 illegal criminal aliens including convicted murderers, rapists, drug dealers and child molesters who served prison time and were released are loose on the streets of America, hiding from federal immigration authorities."

One need only add to the daily massive influx of Mexicans and the OTMs to conclude that we're failing miserably to keep our homeland secure. But we can thank Alan Caruba and the Tombstone Tumbleweed for alerting us about the OTMs who may be crossing our borders ready to answer the possible bidding of Osams bin Laden. It's time to join Alan Caruba and take another look at "Terrorism at the Southern Gates"!
