One Reporter's Opinion — Reinstate the Draft

Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:00 AM

It is this reporter's opinion that with the world in complete turmoil, it is time for America to stop dodging a draft.

Our lame-duck president is determined to continue the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Obviously, the pre-emptive war he got us into, will be allowed to drag on through the remainder of his administration and to then be handed over to an incoming president.

But how are we going to sustain our operations in Iraq beyond 12 to 18 months? Our ground forces — specifically the Army — are stretched to the breaking point.

Our soldiers and Marines have been fighting in Iraq for more than four years, in Afghanistan for more than six. The Army is scrambling to find enough troops as the daily death toll mounts.

Troops are being sent back to Iraq for their third, fourth, and fifth deployments and through "stop-loss" orders, soldiers are prevented from leaving the service even though they have fulfilled their term of duty.

The National Guard and Reserves stay on duty in Iraq, further depleting our already thin domestic response capacity. Some are not even home a year before returning to combat.

New recruits are being sent into intense combat without proper training. The National Guard is in even worse shape, forced to fight, often ill equipped for battle.

Military strategists tell us the Army simply was not built to fight protracted ground wars like the one in Iraq.

After the draft was ended in 1973, the current all-volunteer system was created out of the mindset of no more Vietnams. The Army was intended to be a small highly trained fighting force that would act in an initial response capacity to repel and counter aggression.

But if a conflict were to grow in length or intensity the Army would then revert to the draft. This is why we require young men to register with the Selective Service when they turn 18.

If the president wants to sustain a substantial number of U.S. troops in Iraq, he has got to call for reinstating the draft.

Our nation has a vast resource of red-blooded 18 to 24-year-olds who have always fought and won to sustain our way of life. If the president is committed to fighting the war in Iraq over the long term, instead of simply running out the clock on his presidency, he should have the courage to reinstate the draft.

Otherwise, Mr. Bush, save the lives of our troops dying on a daily basis in the Middle East. Bring the troops home!
