One Reporter's Opinion - A Gutless 9/11 Bill

Thursday, 07 October 2004 12:00 AM

The Karl Rove gang is quietly trying to strip the homeland security-related immigration enforcement and document security provisions from the House Bill H.R. 10 to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations.

The White House has told House Republicans it wants them to REMOVE provisions in their intelligence-overhaul bill that would crack down on ILLEGAL ALIENS obtaining driver's licenses, allow easier deportation, and limit the use of foreign consular ID cards.

Recently this reporter spoke with Rosemary Jenks, a lobbyist for stricter immigration controls for the group, NumbersUSA, who has been tracking the bill and has identified administration officials urging to remove the provisions.

She is shocked by the White House efforts to remove the provisions that would crack down on illegal aliens obtaining driver's licenses, allow easier deportation, and limit the use of the matricula consular ID cards.

House Republican leaders appear to be standing firm in refusing the White House demands. Congressman Tom Tancredo told this reporter he is shocked by the administration's demand to exclude portions of the House Intelligence Bill which would prevent those in the U.S. illegally from obtaining driver's licenses.

Says Tancredo, "This last minute switch by the White House puts in jeopardy the most significant border security enhancements we have seen in years" and he adds, "I sincerely hope that the White House is not seriously thinking about walking away from this effort in the interest of political expediency."

The legislation was originally written with the assistance of the Bush administration which initially signed off on the early language, including the landmark immigration reform measures.

Let us make it quite clear - the administration wants to gut the House Bill that restricts federal employees' acceptance of consular identification cards issued by OTHER nations, which the government accountability office only last week helped illegal aliens to evade immigration law.

The administration, and its anti-immigration wing, is thus attempting to sink the entire bill and throw the carefully reasoned bipartisan recommendations of the 9/11 Commission in the toilet!

All of this hypocrisy as the president travels across the country telling voters how committed he is to protecting homeland security! Is anybody listening? At times, I wonder if we're not listening more to Vicente Fox than our own!

To top it off, the ACLU, open border advocates, are now attempting to rewrite the 9/11 Commission report and the ACLU is directing a disinformation campaign against H.R. 10.

Also Judith Golub, of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, has entered the fray over H.R. 10. She says there are some very troubling provisions and she labels it "an anti-immigration bill."

It is time that Republicans and Democrats alike take a stand in support of the 9/11 legislation and support the House leadership and all immigration safeguards in H.R. 10.

Stop these amendments and the destruction of H.R. 10! You have the power to express yourself in this good and noble cause. Use it!
