Obesity Boosts Cancer Relapse Risk

The health perils of obesity never end - a new study from the University of California at San Francisco shows that prostate cancer is far more likely to return if you are obese or overweight.

Dr. Christopher Kane and his UCSF colleagues analyzed data from over 2000 men who had undergone surgical removal of the prostate and followed them for about 2 years.

Twelve percent of men had a return of the cancer and analysis showed that the more overweight men had a greater risk of the cancer's return than normal weight men..

Men with very high body mass indexes of 35 or greater were 69 percent more likely to have recurrence of prostate cancer than men whose indexes were 25 or less (normal weight). Men with indexes over 30 had a 31 percent increased risk.

The UCSF researchers aren't sure why obesity is linked to prostate cancer return. They speculate that it may have to do with the effects of excess fat on hormone levels - or it could involved something as simple as the increased difficulties of doing fully effective cancer surgery on obese patients.

The bottom line, say the researchers: "Obese individuals undergoing radical prostatectomy require vigilant follow-up care."
