Night Shift Work Linked To Premature Birth

Pregnant women who work the night shift may be more likely to deliver prematurely and have smaller babies, according to a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Lisa A. Pompeii and her colleagues gathered work information through the seventh month of pregnancy on more over 1,900 pregnant women and then compared it to pregnancy outcomes.

The researchers found that women who spent many hours on their feet - more than 30 per week - were no more likely to have a premature delivery or smaller-than-average infants. The same was true of women who repeatedly lifted objects of more than 25 pounds.

But the North Carolina team did find that working the night shift was linked to more premature deliveries and smaller newborns.

In fact, women who worked between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. at any stage of their pregnancy were more likely than daytime workers to have a premature infant - and those who did so during the first trimester were 50 percent more likely to deliver prematurely.

Dr. Pompeii and her colleagues conclude: "Physically demanding work does not seem to be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, whereas working at night during pregnancy may increase the risk of preterm delivery."

The Carolina team adds that they don't know the reason for a link between night work and premature delivery and say their findings should be interpreted with "caution." The study is published in the journal, Obstetrics & Gynecology.
