Navy Releases Names of Missing

Thursday, 13 September 2001 12:00 AM

About half of the bodies recovered have been removed, the Pentagon said.

An additional 64 people aboard the hijacked American Airlines plane used as a piloted missile died in the attack, among them children from the Washington area.

The Army lost 74 people, including 47 civilians and 21 military. Six contractors are also missing.

Among the missing are 42 Navy personnel, including 33 uniformed and nine civilians.

"The Navy has been touched in a broader way in that some of the individuals on the aircraft were in the Navy family," said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Vern Clark. "For example, one of our petty officer's 11-year-old child was on the plane and headed for the West Coast. We have been touched in a broad way. ... This is a day and period that the Navy family is once again pulling together ... I want the whole world to know that this Navy officer is mighty proud."

Navy Secretary Gordon England said he considers the missing combat casualties.

"I guess with terrorism everywhere is a combat zone, New York was a combat zone and the Pentagon was a combat zone," England said.

Capitol Hill and Army sources say Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude, who was the deputy chief of staff for personnel in the Army, was among those killed. He was attending a meeting in a conference room near the area of impact. He had recently moved his office to the outer ring where the plane hit.

The Pentagon is undergoing a 10-year, multibillion-dollar renovation. The impact area is part of the first new "wedge" to be renovated, so some of the offices were not yet occupied. The area immediately adjacent was also less occupied than normal because people were moving out of the area in advance of the second-wedge renovation.

The Navy has notified the next of kin of its unaccounted-for personnel and released their names:
