Murderer Shoots Deputy in Courtroom, Is Killed

Wednesday, 29 May 2002 12:00 AM

The 35-year-old deputy was wounded in the groin. He was taken to Froedtert Memorial Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.

WISN-TV said defendant Laron Ball vaulted over the defense table as the guilty verdict was being read and wrestled away a gun belonging to a courtroom bailiff. He fired one shot that hit the deputy before he was fatally shot by a police officer who was the lead detective in the case against him.

Ball, 20, was on trial for felony murder in the shooting of an Oregon man in December during an armed robbery.

The third-floor courtroom was immediately sealed.

None of the 12 jurors was injured in the melee. The shooting was expected to raise questions about security inside the Milwaukee County Safety Building.
