Movie Theaters Will Donate Sept. 25 Proceeds to Victims

Monday, 24 September 2001 12:00 AM

"This is not a donation of profits, but of all money brought in," Brian Callaghan, Director of Film Marketing for General Cinema, in Chestnut Hill, Mass., told United Press International.

Participating in the drive will be General Cinema, Loews, AMC, United Artists, Hoyts, National Amusements, Landmark Theatres, Regal, Carmike, Mann, Edwards and others.

Of the nation's 37,000 screens, Callaghan told UPI that 28,000 are already committed to this drive. "Probably additional screens will join by the end of the day," he said. "This could bring in millions of dollars. They are donating all box office revenues and all concession revenues to the Victims' Benefit Funds of the Red Cross and the United Way."

Most of the big cinema chains are participating in this unprecedented drive to raise money for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"This is also a way for people get a break from around-the-clock news coverage. It allows them to take their kids to the movies while doing something to help," said Callaghan.

"All patrons have to do is go to see a movie on Sept. 25 with their families or friends and while getting some much-needed entertainment, you'll be doing something to help the victims and families of those whose lives were devastated on September 11th."

Callaghan encourages everyone to forward this information to friends and co-workers.

"In five years online, this is the first time I've ever asked anyone to forward e-mails on to others, and nearly always refrain from doing so myself," said Callaghan.
