Movie of The Week ... 24 Years Ago

I fully believe that the "tipsters" who gave this story to salivating reporters in Maine would have preferred to wait until the eve of the election, but they couldn't be certain that the story would have blossomed into a full-fledged scandal in time for voters who would be pulling the lever in the booth.

Now let's not play any games here and pretend that if the same information was leaked about Al Gore, some of us wouldn't be doing the dance of joy. Heck, one of my colleagues is already writing that sources say Al Gore drove under the influence of drugs a number of times in the '70s. That's politics. And in the course of the Bush DUI story, the Democrats must be thinking it's a sweet thing to revel in a dirty, sleazy bit of news about your political opponent. The fact that it's coming five days before the election is just icing on the cake, right?

But in my heart of hearts, I believe this smear is going to backfire. Big time. Because George W. Bush never denied being arrested for drunk driving. Quite the contrary. When asked about it point-blank a long time ago, his answer: "I do not have a perfect record as a youth. When I was young, I did a lot of foolish things. But I will tell you this, I urge people not to drink and drive. It's an important message for all people to hear." Sound like a denial? Of course not. In fact, every single good investigative reporter in America should hang his or her head in shame for not doing a little digging as soon as they heard his answer. This would have been old news. So much for the liberal elite in the news media doing a very good job.

But since it's not old news, and has been so purposefully planted by a desperate Gore campaign, this story will indeed blow up in the faces of those who thought this would bring George W. down. No thinking American is going to hold a 24-year-old DUI arrest against a man who gave up drinking 14 years ago. No reasonable voter believes that this kind of ancient mistake nullifies Bush's ability to be a great leader. And not one man, woman or child could possibly believe that this wasn't the act of a crazed, pathetic Gore campaign filled with despair over the knowledge that this has been a close race.

This is the kind of breakthrough the Bush campaign needed. And judging by the tactics of the Gore campaign, this is the kind of breakthrough the Bush campaign deserved.
