Mother Convicted of Killing Unborn Baby

Thursday, 17 May 2001 12:00 AM

This is believed to be the first time an American woman has been convicted of murder for taking drugs during pregnancy. Lawyers for 24-year-old Regina McKnight said they will appeal the verdict, which may set a precedent for accusing pregnant women of harming their babies under other conditions - such as smoking.

McKnight's baby was stillborn at 35 weeks, in 1999. Three years earlier, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that a pre-born baby capable of surviving outside the womb (a "viable fetus") is legally considered a child.
