More People Getting Gastric Bypass Surgery

Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:00 AM

The number of people undergoing weight-loss surgery, especially gastric bypass, is soaring, according to a new study from the University of California at Irvine.

Bariatric operations increased 450% between 1998 and 2002, going from 12,775 to 70,256 cases, according to the study by Dr. Ninh Nguyen and his colleagues. Their study appears in the Archives of Surgery.

And the trend is continuing, according to figures from the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. According to their records, 140,640 bariatric procedures were performed in 2004 estimates that more than 170,000 will be done this year.

Gastric bypass surgery, which creates a much smaller stomach and rearranges the small intestine, can be done laparoscopically or with traditional and more invasive methods.

One of the reasons for the increased numbers of gastric bypasses is that more of them are being done laparoscopically. This method allows smaller incisions, less tissue damage, shorter recovery times and is generally more appealing to patients.

Laparoscopic operations have increased from about 2% of all bariatric surgeries in 1998 to 18% in 2002 and may make up more than 50% of the total now, says to Dr. Nguyen.
