Military deployment orders issued

Wednesday, 19 September 2001 12:00 AM

Included in the deployment was the already planned dispatching of the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier battle group from Norfolk, Va., to the Mediterranean or the Arabian Gulf. It will join the USS Enterprise, which is remaining on station past its normal cruise, and the USS Carl Vinson.

There are 15 ships in the Roosevelt battle group. They carry in excess of 80 aircraft and a battery of Tomahawk cruise missiles, as well as other weapons.

ABC News says ground troops are not included in the order.

On Wednesday, Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, in a televised address, told his people that a U.S. strike should not be construed as an attack on Islam. He said the United States has requested Pakistan's help in providing intelligence, helping with logistics and is seeking permission to use its airspace. Pakistan has agreed to all the U.S. requests, State Department officials said this week.
