In Memoriam: David Brinkley

Thursday, 12 June 2003 12:00 AM

David Brinkley died last night. He was 82.

Not long ago there was a brief story reporting that Dave was rescued by firemen when his house caught fire. He was bedridden and, according to the story, was in the hands of a caregiver. The story gave no other details, but the inference was ominous.

I tried to learn what his state of health was, but was unable to get any more information. Obviously the news was grim.

Back in my Washington days David was a friend, not all that close, but still a friend. I saw and talked with him frequently. Once, when visiting the NBC Washington studio on business I brought along two of my sons. David went out of his way to have one of his sons take my boys in hand and give them a tour of the studio so that I’d be free to transact the business I’d come to do.

He was always gracious although politically we were miles apart. In later years, I was forced by my then-editors to intrude on his privacy in an outrageously rude manner on the night NBC fired David. That ruptured our friendship, but he still took time to talk to me when I called him to ask questions.

He was a fixture at ABC, hosting the ABC Sunday show, which has never been the same since he retired six years ago. During his long reign there he developed a format that broke a lot of molds.

He was a great gentlemen, unlike many of the other anchormen of his day and now. Dan Rather and Peter Jennings couldn’t hold a candle to him, either as journalists or as human beings.

I know he hated his signature sign-off during his stint with Chet Huntley, "Good Night, Chet," and Chet’s "Good Night, David."

But I’ll say it anyway: Good Night, David. Rest in peace.
