Memorial Day 2002

Monday, 27 May 2002 12:00 AM

Is it too much to dream that Americans are embracing Memorial Day just a bit more today? I watched President Bush walking along the cliffs of Normandy this morning. I saw the endless rows of markers – over 9,000 crosses and Stars of David – marking the graves of men who died during the invasion.

It's hard to imagine that 130,000 soldiers landed on the Normandy shoreline that day. It's harder to imagine how many of those men never made it off those beaches.

I hope a lot of you saw some of that on television this morning before you headed out for your Memorial Day activities with your family. There are men and women in American uniforms who are once again putting their lives on the line to preserve freedom. Let them be in your thoughts today.

Here's somewhat of a chronology of just how a relatively unimportant story about a somewhat regular intelligence briefing turned into the "What did he know and when did he know it?" controversy:

OK ... get a $20 bill. We're going to show you how that bill figures into current conspiracy theories. They tell me you're about to see the burning twin towers on your U.S. currency:
