Media War Against Bush Continues

Monday, 27 November 2000 12:00 AM

The latest one-two punch came Sunday on Page One of the Washington Post.

Prominently displayed above the fold is a picture of pro-Gore supporters demonstrating outside the vice president’s residence in Washington.

The picture is captioned, "Supporters of Vice President Gore gather across the street from his residence in Washington near where a pro-George W. Bush demonstration was held. Demonstrations in favor of both nominees were also held in Florida."

No full story on the Washington demonstrations accompanies the picture, which leaves the impression that the turnout for both sides there was roughly equal.

Not mentioned is the fact that the pro-Gore demonstration the Post chose to display never rose above 20 all afternoon that previous day, and more typically was near a baker’s dozen.

On the other side of the street, the pro-Bush demonstrators numbered well into the hundreds, rising to more than 500 as the day wore on.

At one time, the pro-Bush people spotted a media reporter and cameraman covering the small band of Gore people, to the exclusion of their own much larger and more significant turnout.

That prompted the Bush-Cheney people to chant repeatedly in unison, "Media bias! Media bias!”

One supporter of President-elect George W. Bush, when asked to comment on the coverage that seemed to confirm the chant, commented: "Well, we always knew we had to fight both the opposition and the supposedly ‘disinterested’ referee. This example says it all."
