Media Bored By McCain?s Antics

Wednesday, 23 May 2001 12:00 AM

Citing the media?s non-reaction to a Rollin Stone article dealing with the controversial senator?s views on the presidential primaries, the national Journal?s Vaughn Ververs wrote that the article which revealed that McCain would have accepted the VP spot had it been offered ?was met with indifference by a media that once seemed interested in covering the Arizona senator's every movement.?

Despite the fact that the Rolling Stone piece pressed all the hot button issues such as campaign finance reform, the environment and health care, and included what Ververs called ?threatening quotes? from McCain aides about a possible run as an independent for the White House in 2004, the article was largely ignored by the media.

?Where there used to be barrels of ink devoted to such things, the Rolling Stone article was picked up only in the gossip columns,? the Journal?s Hotline editor wrote. ?McCain is, after all, just a story -- and every story has a limit to its appeal.?

According to Ververs, McCain attracted his media following by giving reporters free access to him on the campaign trail where Bush and Gore avoided contact with the press as much as possible.

?He reveled in schmoozing them from a throne on his campaign bus,? Ververs recalled. ?They, in turn, had an abundance of material to report on, and the mutual benefits flowed to both -- more attention for McCain's underdog quest and better stories (and ratings) for the networks.?

But McCain?s glory days of basking in the media limelight, surrounded by worshipful reporters appear to be over. He?s now just another one of 100 US senators all competing for media attention.
