Louisiana GOP Unites Behind Terrell

But with the Dec. 7 runoff now just weeks away, all that seems to be changing - and Terrell now has a much better chance to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu. The win would boost the GOP's Senate majority to 52 seats.

Last week Tony Perkins, who finished fourth among the Republican challengers on Election Day, announced that he'll promote Terrell and take active part in her campaign.

"I feel very good about having Tony's endorsement," Terrell told the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Saturday.

On Sunday, Louisiana Gov. Mike Foster finally endorsed Terrell after holding out for weeks, saying she now has his "full and enthusiastic support." As head of the state's GOP, Foster's endorsement is expected to end the disunity that plagued the party before Election Day and undermined Terrell's chances.

Add to that an expected campaign swing by Vice President Dick Cheney and suddenly the raven-haired Republican appears to have "the big mo."

Though President Bush has no current plans to visit Bayou Country, he's pledged to do whatever he can for Terrell's campaign, the Times-Picayune reports.

In a sign the Landrieu camp now knows it's in trouble, spokesman Rich Masters has claimed bizarrely that Terrell's close association with Bush could actually "backfire."

That's will undoubtedly come as news to the myriad of victorious Republican candidates for whom Bush campaigned this fall.
