Liberal Greed: The $39 Million Couple

Sunday, 15 June 2003 12:00 AM

Former President Bill Clinton earned more than $9.5 million in speaking fees last year for 61 paid speeches around the world. Clinton has gotten up to $400,000 per speech, with a typical fee of $125,000, according to the report. In 2001, he tallied $9.2 million.

According to Clinton’s office he also found time to give more than 70 speeches without pay, including talks at the University of Buffalo and NYU's Conference on Religious Reconciliation.

One controversial speech netted $300,000 from the Australian Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China. Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng, who spent 18 years in jail before being freed through Clinton’s efforts, asked Clinton to cancel the speech, saying the group was a front for the regime -- a charge the group denies, according to the Post.

Some reported speech venues and fees:

"It's quite an amazing record as an entertainer - this is the easiest, fastest, most painless way that a celebrity can make a great deal of money and he's a guy who loves to talk," said presidential scholar Stephen Hess.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's disclosure forms, however, indicate that the couple is still strapped with between $1.7 million and $6 million in legal fees. The courts are still mulling the Clintons’ request to have taxpayers cover $3.5 million of their legal expenses.
