Leftists Weigh In on Schiavo Case

Saturday, 26 March 2005 12:00 AM

I've had many, many conversations with these folks on my radio show. And I still cannot figure them out. They go back and forth from buying the lame argument that nourishment through a feeding tube is "life support" to claim to want no government intervention (if there was ever a time for the government to intervene, this is it). And they seem strangely detached from the horrific prospect of this woman slowly and cruelly being dehydrated to death.

Perhaps one simple observation will change their minds. Tonight as my wife and I ran some errands in the car, I channel surfed on my radio dial. The AM stations up and down the dial were filled with talk shows all debating Terri Schiavo's fate. As is talk radio's nature, most hosts were conservative or at least moderate conservative, and all were denouncing the killing of Terri.

But there was one station with a decidedly different point of view. I heard the host attack "the goofy religious right" in America, describing those who prefer life over death. She seemed to positively delight in Terri's death, as if it were a major blow to the Bush adminstration. And she confidently predicted the end of Governor Jeb Bush's political career, since he tried – and failed – to do something to stop the death.

You've probably guessed the station by now: It was a radio station carrying Air America, the so-called "liberal talk radio network." Yes, the same network created with the sole purpose of getting President Bush defeated in 2004, the stage for Al Franken and other like-minded liberal extremists to strut their stuff, was in full-throated glee over Terri Schiavo's starvation death.

I have a simple question for my fellow "conservatives" who purport to be in favor of Terri Schiavo's death: Do you REALLY want to be on the same side of any issue with Air America?
