Lasering Fat Away

At team of researchers at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital are experimenting with a new kind of laser that can break down fat inside the body and melt it away.

If the laser proves successful in further tests it may soon provide a novel approach to several widespread fat-related problems -- the sludged up blood vessels of heart disease, the oil-clogged pores of acne, and plain old unsightly cellulite.

Called a "free-electron laser" (FEL), the device is much more powerful than conventional lasers and produces very specific beams of energy that break down fat without damaging surrounding body tissue.

The process is called selective photothermolysis.

Dr. Rox Anderson, a dermatologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, headed experiments using pig fat and surgically discarded samples of human tissue.

A dermatologist, Dr. Anderson is particularly excited by the technique's potential as a treatment for severe acne. He hopes to use the laser to clear away the fatty substance, sebum, that clogs pores and causes acne.

But he said the laser could also be used to unclog blood vessels or help a person shed excessive body fat.

"We can envision a fat-seeking laser, and we're heading down that path now," he said. He said it will be at least a year before the laser will be tested on living humans.

Dr. Anderson's findings were presented at the Boston meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.
