According to Reuters news service:
The new product, called the Optical Biopsy System, uses painless laser-light energy, directed through an endoscope inserted within the colon.
It assists physicians in determining if polyps should be left alone or removed for further evaluation.
The Federal Drug Administration said Wednesday that the laser system, developed by SpectraScience, Inc. of Minneapolis and used with no adverse effects in a study of 101 patients having a total of 135 polyps, increased accuracy in identifying pre-cancerous colon growths from 82 to 96 percent.
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of death by cancer worldwide. Screening is recommended for both men and women age 50 and over.
