LAPD Officer Led Double Life

Sunday, 08 June 2003 12:00 AM

A federal indictment accuses the 28-year-old Cortez of being a conspirator in an international drug ring, using his family's Burbank, Calif., home as a hub for cocaine, marijuana and Ecstasy distribution.

Cortez is the latest in a string of Los Angeles Police Department officers to be accused of serious wrongdoing.

According to court papers, prosecutors allege Cortez used his law enforcement authority to access a national criminal database to ensure that other members of the drug ring were not informing police on him or two friends.

Deputy Chief Michael Berkow told the L.A. Daily News, "there was nothing in Cortez's career to suggest a double life."

Cortez faces a June 30 trial on charges of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, cocaine and Ecstasy. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
