Kuwait Emir in Stable Condition

Saturday, 22 September 2001 12:00 AM

The emir, a key ally of the United States in the Persian Gulf, arrived at Heathrow Airport late Friday and was immediately taken to a hospital.

Kuwait's Health Minister Mohammad al-Jarallah, who is himself a doctor, said a CAT scan had shown "no negative developments" since the emir, 73, left Kuwait, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

He said Kuwaiti officials had been able to speak to the emir early Saturday, adding there was "no need to worry" about his health.

They said his medical condition will not have any affect on Kuwait's firm support for the anti-terrorism coalition being built by U.S. President George Bush in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in the United States.

Kuwait has condemned the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington. The emir has ruled Kuwait since 1977.
