3. AARP: Best Employers for 50+ Workers

Senior advocacy group AARP deemed 50 companies the best employers for workers over 50 in its annual rankings, released yesterday.

Companies were selected based on their health, pension and retiree benefits, as well as their flexible scheduling practices, training opportunities and phased retirement programs.

Stanley Consultants, an Iowa-based consulting firm, topped the 2005 list. About 75% of the company's employees take advantage of a phased retirement program, and Stanley pays all of its full-time employees' health insurance premiums, prescription drug coverage, as well as short-term and long-term disability coverage.

Second was Scripps Health, a San Diego-based hospital group that offers employees an extensive flexible scheduling program and has an employee emergency trust fund that gives workers paid time off or financial assistance during unforeseen crises.

Some 22 employers on this year's list represented the health care industry. Topping the states, Michigan had the most senior-friendly employers, with six winners.

More companies should follow the example set by the 50 best employers, says AARP CEO Bill Novelli.
