Jipping: Jeffords' Switch Bodes Ill for Judicial Selections

Thursday, 24 May 2001 12:00 AM

"Senate Democrats were already trying to dictate judicial nominations by manipulating confirmations. Majority status will provide new weapons in the Democrats' campaign to hijack judicial selections," Jipping said.

Jipping has been critical of Senate Democrats who have changed their position on whether individual senators should be able to veto nominations in their states. Though they demand a veto now, it was none other than Sen. Edward Kennedy who ended this policy when he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee a quarter-century ago.

Sen. Joseph Biden also rejected a home-state veto when he was chairman of the committee, saying that if the White House consulted with home-state senators, they will not be able to veto nominees. Democrat control of the Senate, Jipping believes, means "Democrats can now change their own policy by granting individual senators an unconstitutional confirmation veto."

Finally, Jipping expects that "Democrats will quickly abandon their past demands for more confirmations, fewer vacancies, and nonpartisan evaluations."
