Jerry Brown Runs for Calif. AG Post

Monday, 07 March 2005 12:00 AM

"I've had an experience no other candidate can talk about. I see the problems," he told the paper.

While no one's certain what kind of AG he'd make, seasoned Brown watchers do admit they see a different man than the one who left Sacramento nearly two decades ago.

These days, rather than spout left-wing progressive policies, Brown is more interested in reducing crime, seeing school kids do better, and improving quality of life for Californians.

In other words, say some, Brown is more conservative these days.

"That's the hallmark of Jerry Brown – he changes. And this is his latest phase," political scientist Bruce Cain, director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California Berkeley, told the paper. "Being mayor and looking at people's problems from the grass roots have clearly moved him to the right."

Among his accomplishments as Oakland mayor:

While every politician has critics, Brown has plenty of supporters in Oakland and elsewhere.

"I like him. He's doing his job," Keith Johnson, an associate pastor with Praise Temple Community Church, said of the former Jesuit seminary student Brown.

"He's doing what he was put there to do: cleaning up the streets, bringing back businesses," Johnson told the Tribune.

Added resident Doris Keglar: "You don't see a lot of streetwalkers. You don't see a lot of dope dealers. The streets are clean."
