Jeffords To Announceme Possible Party Switch Thursday

Wednesday, 23 May 2001 12:00 AM

He had been expected to make an announcement about switching parties Wednesday afternoon in Washington. He did not give any reason for his abrupt change in plans.

The early buzz said Jeffords would become either an independent or a Democrat. Either move would give Democrats control of the Senate, making it more difficult for President Bush to get his legislation passed.

On Tuesday, the 67-year-old Jeffords, who often votes with the Democrats anyway, told reporters, "I will be making an announcement tomorrow in Washington about what I'm doing."

President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney met with Jeffords at the White House on Tuesday, urging him to stick with the GOP, but according to wire reports, Jeffords didn't make any promises. Jeffords is no ally of the Bush administration. He recently voted against Bush's proposed $1.6 trillion tax cut because he said the president's budget plan didn't include enough money for education.
