Jeb Bush Rejects Rumors of Affair

Monday, 14 May 2001 12:00 AM

"I cannot tell you how hurtful this is," Bush said. "I love my wife dearly. I've been married to her for 27 years. I have been faithful to her, and there is nothing to these rumors. It is an outright lie."

A liberal British newspaper, the Guardian, reported "innuendo about his private life" last week, and several Internet sites have reported it.

They said Bush was having an affair with Cynthia Henderson, 38, secretary of the state Department of Management Services. She has been described as a former Playboy bunny turned lawyer.

She was present when Bush made his denial during a signing ceremony for a civil service reform bill, but she would not comment.

Bush, 48, explained how he thinks the rumors became so widespread.

"Standards have changed in some of the newspapers," he said.

He said such reports on people who are living "decent honest lives, that are faithful to their wives in this case," in the past have stayed out of print. But now, he said "it spreads into the mainstream newspapers."

The younger brother of President Bush said after his firm denial he will have nothing more to say on the subject.

"I'm telling you now that it's the last time I'm going to talk about this. That's it," he said.

The governor's office last week refuted one of the rumors, that Bush's wife, Columba, has moved out of the Executive Mansion. Mrs. Bush said in a recent interview that she wanted her husband to run for re-election next year. Bush has said he will announce his re-election plans next month.
