Israeli Parliament Leader Warns Against All-Out War

Tuesday, 22 May 2001 12:00 AM

The Knesset speaker said Israel should implement a temporary freeze in the settlements and the Palestinians must stop the violence to prevent another war in the region, Israel Radio reported.

Burg called on his Labor Party to take the initiative and create a peace plan with the Mitchell report as its focus.

The Labor Party, he said, must restrain the right wing of the government from leading the region to a total war.

"The situation is deteriorating rapidly toward a war," he warned.

His comments follow a peace report by a U.S.-led international task force, urging both the sides to cease hostilities immediately and engage in a dialogue.

Although both Israel and the Palestinian Authority have supported the Mitchell report, right wing Israeli leaders have rejected its proposal for halting Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
