Israeli Forces Storm Nablus

Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:00 AM

Residents said soldiers searched houses in the town and arrested about 30 people. Israel said they were militants from the Hamas movement's armed wing.

Palestinian Radio quoted Israeli army officials as saying that the army planned a long-lasting operation with the goal of hitting the Hamas and Fatah militants operating in the city.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Israeli troops raided the town of Tulkarim and an adjacent refugee camp.

Israel said the towns of Tulkarim and Nablus in the West Bank were being targeted because they were suspected of being linked to Sunday's kibbutz raid. The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, affiliated with Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, has claimed responsibility for the kibbutz attack.

Earlier Wednesday, Israeli Apache helicopters fired several rockets at a Palestinian metal workshop in the Zeitoon neighborhood near downtown Gaza City, witnesses said. No injuries were reported.

Israeli helicopters and warplanes have targeted foundries and metal workshops, saying that these facilities are used in producing homemade weapons used by Palestinian militants against Israel.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip nearly every day fire homemade mortar shells at Jewish settlements, and into Israel. The vast majority of these rockets have not caused injuries among the Israelis.
