Israel Withdraws From Gaza Town

Sunday, 29 June 2003 12:00 AM

The move follows Palestinian Authority undertakings to prevent attacks, arms smuggling and incitement, a military source said.

Tanks and armored personnel carriers churned through soft sands and clouds of dust though an electronic fence into Israel proper. The army spokeswoman said the troops "have redeployed" and the Palestinian Authority "took responsibility for the security in the area."

The army will also remove two roadblocks where the Gaza Strip's main north-south road, that serves the Palestinians, intersects with east-west roads that link Israel with its settlements in Gaza.

Palestinians will have to skirt a third settlement that straddles the strip's main highway.

Israeli and Palestinian field commanders are to meet in the coming days to coordinate their operations, "finalize details and to monitor implementation of the agreement," the army spokeswoman said.
