Iranians Protest Against U.S.

Monday, 11 February 2002 12:00 AM

Chanting slogans like "death to the U.S.," and "death to Israel," protesters waving green, white and red Iranian flags made their way to the central Azadi (Freedom) square to hear President Mohammad Khatami speak, IRNA news agency reported.

The protests marked the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran. Leaders called on protesters to turn out against the United States for the traditional-filled day, following U.S. President George Bush's denunciation of Iran as one of three "axis of evil" countries in his recent State of the Union speech. North Korea and Iraq were also named as countries thought to be creating weapons of mass destruction.

Basijis, hardline Islamic militia volunteers, were among the demonstrators, IRNA reported, as were Afghan refugees, clerics and soldiers.

Demonstrations started at mosques around the capital, the news agency reported. Khatami, considered a reformist, said this year's rally was particularly important because of accusations against Iran.

"This participation is more important than before because of the baseless, erroneous and insulting comments against Iran," Khatami said.

At the same time, however, the reformist movement put out a statement calling on people to attend that included a long list of civil rights problems it infers come from the country's hardline judges.

The statement said such civil rights problems conflict with ideals and values of the Islamic revolution, are detrimental to Iran's national security and diminish the legitimacy of the Islamic regime.
