Iran's Ahmadinejad Plans News Conference at U.N.

Monday, 18 September 2006 12:00 AM

UNITED NATIONS -- Senior Iranian diplomats tell NewsMax that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will hold a major news conference at United Nations headquarters Thursday morning.

The controversial Iranian leader begins a four-day U.N. visit on Monday highlighted by a speech to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday evening.

It also comes as the U.N. Security Council will meet to consider economic and political sanctions on Iran for refusing to "suspend" its nuclear fuel activities.

Ahamdinejad arrives in New York City after a trip to Havana where he attended the conference of non-aligned nations followed by a 2-day "state" visit to Venezuela.

In Venezuela's capital, Caracas, the Iranian president - the guest of another U.S. antagonist, Hugo Chavez - announced what amounts to a "mutual defense pact" in which Venezuela would aid Iran if attacked by the United States. Both leaders repeatedly blasted the Bush administration on a wide range of subjects. Just how Venezuela could come to the "aid" of Iran if attacked, was not "explained" by the two presidents.

U.N. sources tell NewsMax that the fiery Venezuelan president also expects to "brief" the press when he visits the General Assembly this week.

While both leaders will not be invited to a Bush-UN VIP reception on Tuesday evening, they will all attend a private luncheon hosted by outgoing U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan that afternoon. One feature of the Annan lunch is that the dignitaries are free to move around at will.

Annan retires after 10-years as UN chief January 1, 2007.

No successor has yet emerged.
