Insiders: Hillary Will Be Dem Nominee in '08

Friday, 27 May 2005 12:00 AM

Curiously, most Democrats said it was "her persona."

Among Democrats who said Hillary would win, one insider declared: "No one in the Democratic field can beat her – she can only lose it."

A Democrat who opined that she wouldn't win said: "She has the money, but even among Democrats she is too much of a polarizing figure."

And another said that if she wins, "she will make us a minority party for the next generation."

Said a Republican: "Hillary Clinton epitomizes the current Democratic party. But the jury is out on whether she can win the November election."

Among Democrats who cited her persona as her biggest obstacle, one said: "In her First Lady days and in 1992, we saw a Hillary Clinton who, under pressure, came across as unlikable and sometimes shrill. The other candidates need a long and protracted process to expose that Hillary Clinton."

The Democratic insiders – selected for their campaign experience, political knowledge and ties to key voting blocs – include John Podesta, Bill Clinton's chief of staff; former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe; Democratic strategist Donna Brazile; former House Democratic whip Tony Coelho, and Harold Ickes, deputy chief of staff at the Clinton White House.

Republicans include Gary Bauer, president of the group American Values and an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 2000; former Bush aide Mary Matalin; political consultant Dan Schnur; Ken Duberstein, a chief of staff for Ronald Reagan, and pollster Alex Gage.
