India to Go Ahead with Nuclear Weapons

Thursday, 10 May 2001 12:00 AM

The Press Trust of India said that the DAE annual report does not, however, mention what is the minimum number of weapons New Delhi wants to produce.

The report said that the "Bhabha Atomic Research Center continued implementation of necessary research and development as well as manufacturing activities to meet the national policy of credible minimum nuclear deterrence."

The report also said that work on a terra-watt laser is "progressing as per schedule" at the Center for Advanced Technology in Indore. Similar high-powered lasers are used to simulating thermonuclear explosions in the laboratory, the PTI said.

The report does not say when the terra-watt laser will be ready for testing but says that scientists have been working on upgrading a machine that shoots out beams of electrons. The particle-beam weapons, developed by the United States in the 1980s, have potential to knock down enemy missiles, the PTI news report said.

India drew worldwide attention, criticism and economic sanctions form the United States when it conducted underground nuclear tests three years ago. Neighboring Pakistan, which has fought several wars with India, carried out similar tests a few days later.
