Hugo Chavez Abruptly Leaves New York

Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:00 AM

NEW YORK -- Diplomatic sources at the United Nations tell NewsMax that fiery Venezuela President Hugo Chavez will "wrap up" his controversial New York visit early to return home to Caracas.

Earlier reports had indicated that Chavez would possibly cancel all appointments and flee the country in the early morning. However, Chavez did keep a scheduled appearance at a church in Harlem, where he is expected to tout his plan to give low-cost home heating oil to poor families in New York City. That plan is supported by Citgo, which is owned by the Venezuelan government.

The president canceled several appointments previously scheduled in New York City today including a second news conference he was to hold at Venezuela's United Nations mission.

Venezuela's U.N. mission announced the "new" schedule in a late night e-mail to a group of reporters saying that the president's Thursday schedule had "changed."

It offered no details.

On Wednesday, Chavez, in a controversial speech in the U.N. General Assembly, mocked President George Bush repeatedly calling him "the devil."

That brought a somewhat surprised Venezuelan "leader" a tirade of blasts in Thursday's NYC newspapers, including a "shot" from the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton, who told reporters that comments like the ones from Chavez are more suited to Central Park than the United Nations.
