HRT Raises Risk of Ovarian Cancer

Monday, 18 June 2007 12:00 AM

Scientists have found a further reason for women to avoid hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – the estrogen it contains raises the risk of developing deadly ovarian cancer. The Times of London reports that three new studies have shown an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer in those women who have taken HRT.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most difficult to treat, mostly because it often isn't diagnosed until it is advanced. In 80 percent of all cases, by the time the disease is diagnosed, it has already spread throughout the abdomen and requires intensive surgery and chemotherapy.

About two percent of women develop ovarian cancer, and most of them are in their 60s when the disease strikes.

Although HRT increases the amount of estrogen and raises the risk of cancer, a new study suggests that the use of anti-estrogen drugs which are the opposite of HRT, can help extend the lives of the victims of ovarian cancer. Researchers hope they might one day be used to treat ovarian cancer the way Herceptin is now used to treat breast cancer.
