Honor the Private Ryans and Concede

Thursday, 23 November 2000 12:00 AM

Al Gore needs to remember that our freedom and abundance today are the result of enormous sacrifice made before us.

President Lincoln first proclaimed this holiday of thanksgiving as a day to remember the great sacrifices made on both sides during a most terrible civil war.

America became great because of the Private Ryans who fought in such wars.

No doubt Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford were thinking of America’s Private Ryans when they could have challenged, respectively, close elections in 1960 and 1976.

Nixon and Ford chose to do what they believed was in the best interest of the American people and stepped aside.

Al Gore is different. He has made his personal interests paramount.

Gore’s personal selfishness has translated into disqualifying ballots from the people who have offered themselves up to maintain our freedom, our heroic military men and women.

Allow me to share an e-mail I received today from one our readers, Jennifer Torres of Baltimore:

On November 7, 1950, Marines were killed in large numbers at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. One of those Marines was my grandfather. Fifty years later to the day Americans voted in our current election for President of the United States.

My Grandfather, Staff Sergeant Nile Wells, was killed in action, fighting to protect the rights of all Americans. One of their most precious rights is the right to cast a ballot and have it counted. Americans in the military, stationed abroad, are continuing those efforts with their lives everyday.

I find it inconceivable that the rights they try to protect can be so arbitrarily taken away from them.

The Republicans need to remind the public and the media about people like Staff Sgt. Nile Wells. America is more important than one person’s selfish quest for the presidency.
