Hillary Aide Trial: Jury Selection Underway

Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:00 AM

Among the questions were:

Rosen is charged with making false statements to the Federal Election Commission regarding a star-studded August 2000 fundraiser for Mrs. Clinton's campaign. He claimed the event cost about $400,000 to stage, according to the indictment.

But the event's organizer, Hollywood mogul Peter Paul, told the FBI he spent $1.2 million on the gala.

The under-reporting allowed Mrs. Clinton to spend more money elsewhere on her campaign, prosecutors said.

Clinton has not been charged in the case and is not expected to testify. But her political opponents hope the proceedings will offer ammunition to Republicans seeking to derail her re-election next year and her potential run for president in 2008.

Also on Tuesday, Judge A. Howard Matz rebuffed a request from defense attorneys to introduce details of Paul's criminal record in their opening arguments.
