High Iron Intake Boosts Cancer Risk

A high iron intake increases the risk of throat and stomach cancer, while a high zinc intake lowers the risk, according to major University of Minnesota study.

Dr. David R. Jacobs and his colleagues analyzed 16 years of dietary and health data from almost 35,000 postmenopausal women. After 16 years, 75 of the women had developed throat or stomach cancers.

The Minnesota team divided the subjects into groups based on dietary iron and zinc levels. Risk factors including age, total calorie consumption, cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption, were all factored in.

Women with the highest iron intake had three times the cancer risk of those with low intakes. But for zinc, those with the highest intake had only a small fraction (13 percent) of the risk for those with low intakes.

The results were not altered after consideration of other potential risk factors such as body mass index, physical activity score, hormone replacement therapy, multivitamin intake and intake of saturated fat, retinol, vitamin C, vitamin E, and folate.

"Our current and previous results strongly suggest that both iron and zinc play important roles in carcinogenesis of digestive tract, probably through the mechanism of oxidative stress," say the researchers. Their study appears in the International Journal of Cancer.
