Gore Victory Would Help Clintons Pay Legal Bills

Tuesday, 21 November 2000 12:00 AM

The newspaper's Neal Travis notes the Clintons still have legal debts of around $10 million from defending themselves against charges stemming from the Whitewater investigation. According to Travis, "What isn't so well-known is that under the independent-counsel law, if a subject isn't indicted and if the investigation can in any way be deemed 'politically motivated,' then the subject can petition the courts to pay all or part of his defense costs."

The newspaper says Bush would not be inclined to cut Clinton any slack on his legal bills. But, says the newspaper, "if Gore grinds out a victory, the Clintons will benefit, and some friendly judge will surely grant them relief from their legal bills."
