Gore Revisits Florida for First Time Since Election Loss

Wednesday, 09 May 2001 12:00 AM

State Democrat party chairman Bob Poe met privately with Gore and said they talked about whether he might run for president again.

"I don't think he even knows at this point," Poe said. "I don't think that he has made his decision. I think that he's still in the decision-making process, and I don't think he and Tipper have decided what they want to do next."

Gore spoke at a meeting of travel industry executives. He displayed humor in his talk and had no contact with Democrat supporters who gathered outside Orange County Convention Center.

In the speech, Gore made fun of his loss and joked about the difficulty of returning to private life.

He commented on Travel Industry Association of America's method of selecting a chairman: "As I understand your system, your vice chairman automatically becomes the chairman. That sounds good to me."

He said he liked what Florida had done with its new election reform law.

"I particularly applaud the provision whenever a vote is in dispute to count the ballot by hand," he said.

Gore refused to comment on how President Bush is handling the office.

Gore praised the tourism group for helping the U.S. economy and said he had supported international tourism while in the U.S. Senate.

Audience members said they liked the relaxed Gore, and some Republicans thought he might have won the campaign if he had seemed this personable then.

In front of the building, about two dozen supporters held up signs reading "Re-elect Gore in 2004" and "Anybody seen my old friend democracy."

Bob Kunst, spokesman for a homosexual group that calls itself Oral Majority, expressed his disappointment over Gore's behavior since losing the election.

"You ran for president. Your country needs you. We're in grave danger. This man is illegitimate in the White House, doing war on the American people and isolating our government from the rest of the world. We're having one crisis after another," he claimed.

"Where are you? How come you're so silent?" Kunst asked.
