Gore Due to Speak Today

Secretary of State Katherine Harris certified Florida's vote totals Sunday, giving Florida's 25 electoral votes to Bush. Gore aides expected this and plan to protest the certification and some county results in Florida courts today.

With evidence that Democrats are weakening in their resolve to stick with him until the bitter end, Gore’s advisers reportedly want him to explain why he is fighting the certification and to set the stage for the coming clash before the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Whatever the secretary of state has to say, somebody will contest those votes and at that point people are going to say, 'Enough is enough. It's time to put this puppy to bed,' " Jim Duffy, a Democratic strategist in Washington, told Reuters News Agency.

"I suppose if Gore is behind at that point Sunday, he will have evaporated more than half of the patience that Americans votes would have with this continuing," Benjamin Matwey, a Democratic activist and former Delaware coordinator of Bill Bradley's failed primary campaign, told Reuters before the certification of votes in Florida.

Leah Betts, a Gore supporter on the Democratic National Committee, added that Gore has every right to keep fighting for recounts but his time is running out. "I'm sure Al Gore knows more than I know, but I just want it to be settled and for somebody to do the right thing for the people of the United States."

Gore lawyer David Boies, however, told reporters, "Since both sides filed contests, and since we all know those contests will be resolved by Dec. 12 (when Florida's 25 electors must be named), I don't think the idea that the election is over with the certification by Governor Bush's Florida campaign manager is going to get a lot of traction."
