Gore Campaigns in Polling Place

Wednesday, 08 November 2000 12:00 AM

Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chip Saltsman said videotape of Gore shaking hands and talking with voters inside the polling place shows a violation of campaign law regarding campaign activities.

According to Saltsman, federal law demands that candidates refrain from campaign activity within 100 feet of a polling place.

"He was kind of giving a civics lesson," Saltsman said. "He was right there in the gym, campaigning at the polling place with his kids."

But Saltsman stopped short of officially condemning Gore's activities. "Right now, I feel pretty good. Our candidate is going to win, and it's not my place to say whether he violated law or not," said Saltsman.

Gore campaign officials did not immediately respond to Saltsman's comments on Gore's actions.
