Gore Campaign Unleashes Most Negative Ad Yet

Thursday, 02 November 2000 12:00 AM

The ad focuses on Bush's record as governor of Texas.

"As governor, George W. Bush gave big oil a tax break while opposing health care for 220,000 kids," the ad claims. "Texas now ranks 50th in family health care. He's left the minimum wage at $3.35 an hour, lets polluters police themselves. Today Texas ranks last in air quality."

"Now Bush promises the same $1 trillion from Social Security to two different groups," the ad alleges. "He squanders the surplus on a tax cut for those making over $300,000. Is he ready to lead America?"

The Gore campaign says it is airing the attack commercial in 17 battleground states, including Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, Missouri and Pennsylvania.

Bush campaign spokesman Dan Bartlett told CNN that the ad "is completing his campaign the way he started it: with distortions and attacks."

"Al Gore is running more than $60 million in attack ads, making his campaign the most negative in history," Bartlett added.
